The Northern Island (19 Jan 2007)

I went to Chek Jawa with my family. Chek Jawa is on Pulau Ubin. We drove to Changi village and ate there.

Then we went to the jetty. When there were 12 passengers, the boat set off for Pulau Ubin. It was a 10 minutes ride and it cost $2 per person per single trip.

When we reached the island of Pulau Ubin, we walked to the toilet. We continued walking and we saw some places for food, some people selling boots. We found out that bicycle rental is only $2. Then, we found the office. The office staff said that we were too early for the Chek Jawa trip. So, he suggested we can go for a sensory trail, which is the shortest trail on the island.

When we went on the trail, I felt very tired of walking and we got lots of mosquito bites. Along the trail, we saw some scarecrows, some red bugs on the plants, and blue butterfly. I saw curry plant, ladyfinger’s plant.

The ground was very muddy because it had been raining heavily for the past few days. We started to walk faster and run because we thought that we may be late. When we were almost at the end of the trail, mummy and I ran towards the office. Then my brother started to cry. So mummy ran back to him.

When we reached the office, we rested while mummy and my brother went to the toilet. Then we got into a van that drove us to Chek Jawa. We had a guide – Uncle Mark. I sat at the front of the van. The driver drove us to the nearest hut to Chek Jawa called Punai Hut.
.

We walked pass a mangrove swamp with small crabs crawling out. We saw some workers carrying dead anemones away because they’re rotting and smelly. We saw some fiddler crabs. One arm of the male fiddler crab was bigger than the other so that they can use it for fighting and courtship, not for feeding. We also saw some soldier crabs eating up sand and poo poo out sand balls.
We also saw some anemones that were dead. We saw sea slug, round sea cucumber. Many of these animals were dead because the rain water is not salty enough for them to live, so many died. Later, I saw a squid and the striped eeltail catfish that were washed up unto the beach. I saw a shrimp that was still alive and was as long as my index finger. I also saw a dead crab that was as big as my hand.

Then I noticed some black clouds. I saw some workers still working on the boardwalk which may be ready in April. Then we head back to the van.

Halfway through, it started to rain. Uncle Mark helped us to bring our belongings from the hut and the van came to pick us up. It started pouring heavily. This time, my brother and I sat at the front of the van. My youngest brother was tired and fell asleep. Halfway through the journey, we saw a big truck. The truck turned into another lane while our van went pass. I think the big truck was going to pick up the dead anemones.

When we reached the jetty, we went to the toilet. We said goodbye to the island and Uncle Mark and took the bump boat back to mainland Singapore. Then mummy went back to Changi village to buy dinner home.

I would like to go back again to Chek Jawa but because of the rainy season, we did not get to see many animals. I wished I could go out to the sea to see the fish. I liked the van and boat rides.

The free Underwater World at Sentosa

This was the biggest coral we saw, about 80cm across. Maybe a Zoanthid coral, but they look like the encrusting type. I think we normally see their dead skeletons but this is the first time I saw them alive. Can anyone help me?

A close-up of the coral colony

A small hard coral colony.

A bigger one still covered by water.

Another hard coral. We can see that the green colour was shining.

We are not sure what this little hard thing with 2 holes at the top is. It was in the middle of the rocks with some snails.

We saw this little thing squirt water at us. Then a tentacle waved at us. Probably a sea squirt (ascidian)

A brown sponge

Looks like a sponge

A sponge colony

Looks like a green sponge. The white tips look like they have been broken off. There were quite a few of these.

Brown seaweed attached to a small rock. There were many of them all over the place.
Looks like a Mermaid's fan ( a type of seaweed)
